DIY versus Professional Pool Maintenance

DIY versus Professional Pool Maintenance

When you buy a pool, maintenance is probably not at the top of your list of things you’re looking forward to. Why can’t you just get a pool and not have to worry about cleaning it? Unfortunately, like a home, cleaning a pool is necessary. But, also like a home, you have options when it comes to pool maintenance. You can do it yourself, or you can hire a professional. What’s the difference, you ask? Here’s what you can expect from DIY versus professional pool maintenance.

Work Hard, Play Hard

The biggest benefit of doing pool maintenance yourself is knowing that once you’re done, you get to spend time in your pool. You’ve put all of this work into maintaining it, and now you get to enjoy it. If you like putting in effort and getting a reward, doing your pool maintenance yourself may be the right call. But what does this look like, exactly? Here’s a sample of what you can expect for pool maintenance:

  • Multiple times per week: Check and balance your water levels, clean out debris, and check your pool walls for algae.
  • Once every week or two: Rinse off your pool filters, vacuum your pool, shock your pool water, and take a sample of your pool water to be tested by a professional.
  • Once every few months: Deep clean your pool filters and/or switch them out with a different set.
  • Once a season: Completely drain your pool and replace the filters.

Depending on how often you use your pool, you may need to follow these steps more often. However, it is a good idea to follow these steps even if you don’t use your pool often to make sure it stays in tip-top shape. This also does not include additional steps that are necessary for opening and closing your pool, or any issues that may arise during the pool season.

Kick Back and Relax

If you are not looking forward to the maintenance side of pool ownership and would rather have someone else do it for you, professional pool maintenance is probably the right choice for you. Once a week, a professional comes and does all of this work for you. All you have to do is test the water a couple of times a week and sweep out any debris; everything else is handled by the pool maintenance team.

Depending on the professional service you choose, you may also be able to customize how often they come, and some services even bring the chemicals and supplies themselves. So not only do you not have to worry about maintenance, you also don’t have to worry about having all of the supplies in stock.
