Summer Shrimp Boil on a Grill

A shrimp boil on a grill is perfect when you’re having a large group of guests over, and you want to feed them a summer seafood feast. 

A traditional shrimp boil usually happens in an open outdoor space with a huge pot that brings together the flavors of the meat, vegetables, and spices. But an easier — even more flavorful option — is to cook your summer shrimp boil on your grill! Here’s how.

Summer is the perfect time for a bayou-style seafood boil, but have you ever thought about cooking it up on a grill instead? You might think that a shrimp boil involves cooking the ingredients in a traditional large pot, but it doesn’t have to be done that way. 

Using a grill is not only easier, but you also have the added benefit of the smoky flavor you get from grilling the ingredients. Moreover, when you’re planning on a backyard party, it’s twice the fun because everyone heads outdoors for the grill and enjoys the ongoing waft!

You could simply grill all the ingredients on the grates or in a grill pan. But, if you ask us, foil packets are the most delicious option. The foil bundle creates the perfect steamy environment for your potatoes and corn to cook and locks in all the juices. Add to that the smoky flavor you get from using your grill … your guests are about to be wowed! 

There are lots of regional shrimp boil recipes, but the classic ingredients are shrimp, smoked sausage, potatoes, corn, Old Bay® Seasoning, and lemon. Prepare a foil packet for each person by simply placing all the ingredients on a large piece of foil, adding a bit of butter, and then folding the foil into a tightly sealed packet. Here are some other tips to consider when planning a summer shrimp boil on a grill:

  • If your grill has a burner, you can boil your corn in a pot on the side if you prefer.
  • Try to use baby potatoes. Or, for regular-sized potatoes, chop them into smaller pieces. 
  • Vary it up! Grill lobster tail, switch to Andouille sausage, add onions to the packets. You can customize your shrimp boil any way you like.
  • Serve with lemon slices and a sprinkle of parsley for a fresh finish.
